Hidden gem in nature

Just off Route 1 in South Iceland, hidden between mountains and almost invisible from a distance, lies one of the country’s oldest swimming pools – Seljavallalaug. Built in 1923, it was conceived as a community project: a place where locals could learn to swim and spend time together – long before hot tubs and spas became trendy.

Today, it stands silent, majestic, and a little abandoned – which only adds to its unique charm.

Be one with nature

A 15-minute walk from the parking area brings you suddenly face to face with the pool – long, deep, and made of concrete, surrounded by rocks and moss in soft green tones. The water is warm enough for you to float, take in the nature around you, and watch the clouds drift over the glacier.

There’s algae growing in the pool, giving it a greenish hue and a possibly slippery floor – something to be mindful of as you step in.

Seljavallalaug isn’t about luxury – the changing rooms are basic and there’s no service on site – but that’s exactly what makes it so special.
