Secret Lagoon: Where it all began
-640x427.jpg&w=2048&q=80)
Before terms such as “spa” and “wellness” became part of everyday speech, locals sat at Flúðir in a small pool heated by hot springs – simple, hot and completely natural. That pool still lives on – and now under the name Secret Lagoon, although there is no more secrecy about the beauty it holds.
A pool with history
The pool, called Gamla laugin or "the old pool" by the locals, was built in 1891 and is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland. It became the site of the first organized swimming lesson in Iceland – and is still a place where past and present meet in geothermal heat and tranquility.
Surrounded by geysers
The pool itself is surrounded by small geysers that blow steam and move the water slightly, and this adds to the overall experience: the heat comes directly from the ground and nature controls the speed. A path runs along the rim where you can watch the hot spring Litla-Geysi erupt regularly, which adds to the experience of how strong the connection is with nature in this unique place.
A vital part of Iceland's bathing culture
Notwithstanding its name, Secret Lagoon is no longer a secret – but it retains the charm that a pool experience needs in the spectacular nature surrounding it and reminds us of the heart of Iceland’s bathing culture.
